Seaweed: A Mighty Green Superfood
I’m constantly looking for new and inspiring ways to get my fill of greens. We live in a culture that embraces nutrient-packed plants in new and adventurous ways. Some food for thought — as you think about resolutions for the upcoming year maybe think about experimenting with new fruits and veggies each month. You’ll be amazed with how your body changes over the course of a year.
Allow me to help start you off. Seaweed. This ocean-grown veggie is incredibly rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. There are many different types from red algae (the kind used in your favorite sushi) to blue-green algae (commonly referred to as spirulina). I’m a big fan of spirulina and use it in all our Green Dream Superfood + Protein Blend products.
Here’s why I recommend adding it to your superfood grocery list:
- It pulls toxins out making it great for post-chemo or post-surgery cleanses
- Great source of iodine which is needed for the creation of thyroid hormones in your body
- Antioxidant, antifungal AND anti-inflammatory (yep, that about covers it)
- BONUS: some studies have suggested that seaweed can help regulate estrogen
There are many ways to enjoy this superfood. Sushi, for one and most miso soups use this veggie. You can also use it as sheets in a delicious salad, as a base in a stir fry, or simply sprinkle it on top of food for added flavor and nutrients.
