Blueberry Picking + The Joy of Gathering Food
Happy National Blueberry Picking Day! When it comes to our food, there’s nothing quite like visiting the very earth where your food is grown and being able to gather your nourishment while it’s at its peak ripeness.
Living in California, my family and I are so SO lucky to live close enough to produce farms—I really wanted to take advantage of this gift and share it with my kids. To celebrate the blueberry holiday, I decided to take Kai and Leo to a nearby farm for a beyond beautiful morning of berry picking.
For the three of us, it was a few hours of PURE HEAVEN—being surrounded by the vibrant green of the orchard, baskets brimming with plump summer berries, sticky fruit-juice fingers, + smiles that outshined the sunlight.
Kai and Leo didn’t want to leave.
And in a way, I didn’t want to either—I wish that everyone could have access to these gardens and farms of bliss + nourishment.
I wish that we could just all walk out to the nearest bush or tree and gather whatever yumminess happens to be growing. I wish that we could all see our food for the gift that it is—AMAZING + DELICIOUS nourishment that fuels us to be the most energized, most inspired versions of who we are.
And it’s so simple, so easy to do this when we’re DIRECTLY connected to our food, whether that means talking to the farmer who nurtured it or picking it ourselves.
And so our morning of berry-picking bliss has come to a close, but until then we’ll have our fruit baskets ready for the next harvest...

I’m wondering about food detox for someone who’s had gastric bypass, chronic pain suffered, in heavy meds and so anemic I might need a blood transfusion. And I hate veggies and fruit. Is there hope for me?
