What Makes Manuka Honey So Special?

Philosophie Manuka Honey

Honey is one of the oldest and most versatile natural remedies. Ancient cave paintings depicting beekeeping suggest that honey has been harvested by humans since prehistoric times and it has been used for thousands of years to treat a variety of ailments from open wounds to the common cold.

Ancient civilizations seemed to instinctively understand the potent healing powers of honey, but it wasn’t until the 19th century that researchers were able to prove that honey has natural antibacterial properties. Their research explained why honey was such an effective treatment for health issues that stem from an overgrowth of harmful bacteria.

The compound that gives honey its anti-bacterial properties is methylglyoxal, also known as MG and while it is found in all honeys, manuka honey contains some of the highest concentrations of MG of all honey varieties. Manuka Honey is made by bees that pollinate the flowers of the Manuka Bush, which is native to New Zealand and southeast Australia. Due to its exceptionally high levels of MG, manuka honey has been revered for its potent anti-bacterial properties, along with a host of other healing benefits.

Manuka honey has been used to soothe sore throats, to heal oral and stomach ulcers, and to assist in bodily hydration. Manuka honey also contains powerful antioxidants that help prevent free radical damage in the body and reduce the signs of aging. When we combined our nutrient-rich superfood blends with healing Manuka honey, we created an incredibly healing superfood product that is just as delicious as it is nourishing.

Manuka is also used for burns and wounds because of its healing effects. One thing I want to tell you about best Manuka honey is that it can be used to prevent infection in people with venous ulcers.
